You gotta love Gateway Supervisor Carol Stanley. She comes up with some of the most memorable quotes. No holding back. If she's thinking it, she's saying it.
As an acclaimed "political writer and humorist" myself, according to Florida Weekly even I have to respect that just a bit.
Thursday night the Gateway Services District Board of Supervisors considered 4 proposals to conduct a complete review of how the district functions.
The goal was to have someone examine the entire operation and make recommendations as to whether our little government is running efficiently. For example, the district pays full and part-time employees, benefits, perks etc a little over a half million dollars a year. That's a lot of money. Is that really necessary for what amounts to a glorified H.O.A.
One of the companies looking for the business was David Lethem. Lethem is a Stoneybrook resident who also recently announced he would be running for the board. Supervisor Stanley immediately went on the attack stating that this was a conflict of interest. The election is in November, by the way. And, one of the seats up this year is Carol Stanley's.
Stanley said having you review the working of the district would be "like asking my kids if I'm spending our money wisely". WOW! And they complain about me insulting them. At least I reserve my insults for elected officials, not residents. She added "it just doesn't make any sense to me at all"
She also told Lethem she doesn't think a resident is independent. When Lethem asked her by what definition Stanley said by my definition and I'm voting. And she finished up the conversation with "I'm getting a rash". Uhhhh, can we get a little talc in seat one for Supervisor Stanley please!
One of Stanley's all time best quotes was when she said "this is like nailing jell-o to the wall". I can't even remember what she was referring to but that quote is in a wetland wing of the Carol Stanley Quote Hall of Fame. Her top quote will always be one directed at the park committee, of which I was once the chairman. She said "we should buy all the residents pizza when we have public meetings about the park". I remember the park committee repeating that quote for over a year.
