YOUR MONEY WASTED: 20G's To Pressure Wash And Paint a Water Tank

Fort Myers Florida
It could be called What I learned on my unbudgeted trip to Tallahassee....How to ask for more taxpayer money. Last year during the budgeting process Gateway Operations Manager Bill Knight put $18,000 in the budget to clean the reclaimed irrigation storage tank. This Thursday night, Knight will request another $2,000 to accomplish the project because he missed the budgeting mark by 2G's. Ooops!
Knight received estimates to clean and paint the tank ranging from $19,000 to $28,000. It's hard to believe that in this economic recession estimates are higher in 2010 than they were in 2009 when the budget was put together. Or, it could mean that no estimates were gotten in 2009 before the budgeting process and the $18,000 just formulated out of thin air.

Of course the bigger question is if there is not enough money in the budget this year why don't the Supervisors wait until next year when the proper amount is budgeted? Are we ni violation of a code? Can we be fined? Those are always possibilities as you know. Probably, the answer is more simple though, as it is with most governments. Tax dollars collected are a shell game. Shuffle the funds around as needed, no discipline to stick to budgets.
