Fort Myers, FL
No progress was made last night on the Charter School issue. Charter is requesting an assessment refund from Gateway for 2007. As we reported earlier in the week district attorney Tony Pires is going back and forth with Charter School attorney Shari McCartney.
Pires has made several public document requests from Charter which he says he has not yet received. Pires pointed out, as we did, that McCartney was voicing her frustration with the district claiming this was "an attempt to delay the refund process". Pires updated the board on the back-and-forth between the two attorneys which prompted Supervisor Carol Stanley to accuse the Charter School Attorney of "having an attitude problem". Hopefully she won't feel the same way when Pires goes after the Country Club demanding we get a prompt refund for the wetland debacle.
Apparently our defense against Charter will be that Florida lawmakers never intended the law to focus on a small community like Gateway (a community development district). His argument will be that the law was intended for county municipalities where the pain could be spread out over more people.
