Fort Myers, FL
We've generated some very interesting discussion regarding our CDD and whether or not we really even need one anymore.
I received this awesome letter from a resident that I belive is worth sharing with you. It's something I heard a lot about during the last election. However, e have not even been able to get the board to seriously consider hiring an outside firm to do a head-to-toe examination of how the district is being run. If we can get that done, at some point, perhaps this is a viable step.
Dear Ed
I think you just need to start a movement to simply dissolve the entire CDD and give all the owned land to Lee County or annex into the City of Fort Myers. We can continue to pay for landscaping maintenance as a simple assessment. The only things the CDD actually owns at this point are the water and sewer lines, storm water management system and a few roads. Give it all away to LC DOT, LC parks and rec, LCU, etc. and get rid of the additional layer of bureaucracy and some of the additional taxes. The city of Fort Myers is a little higher tax structure, but in theory you get more services (police, etc.) and it is an actual government, not the dysfunctional thing we have.
You should ask for a meeting with one of the commissioners and get this started. You could probably get a referendum or ballot done by the next election. If we annex to the City you could probably get voted to a seat on the commission.
