Perhaps someone more in the know than I am can answer- why is there not a school zone - blinking lights, crossing guard in and around the elementary and high schools? I know there are police now near the schools, but why not a school zone with max 15 mph during certain hours? I have never seen anything like this, it's just not right.
ReplyDeleteIt happened in an area where typically kids don't walk. Some kids will walk from the high school to meet up with a parent waiting in line at the elementary school for a younger sibling. I'm guessing that will no longer be an option. That intersection can be very busy with cars punching it to get across Daniels.
ReplyDeleteThat school is absolutely ridiculous, and has never had a school crossing zone in the past 5 years, that I know of. There are many students who walk to their parents' cars and are unsupervised. The principal, or the county, needs to hire crossing guards to make sure all students are safe. Of course, with this school, they are more concerned with money rather than with safety.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of a school that doesn't have a crossing guard. How can that be allowed by not only the county but by the principal?
ReplyDeleteThere should be a school speed zone just like there is for every public school. I see comments on how ridiculous the school is. What about commenting on the driving habits of the Gateway residents. How about the parents that drop their child off before the school so as to not make the line. All to save precious time. Lets start thinking about our children's safety. I'm sure that the teenage driver of the car is feeling really bad and has probably learned a very important lesson. How about we start banning texting and such while driving. Lets work together as a community & see how we can get school speed signs posted. Use this terrible incident as a way to save lives in the future.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone Know if the child that got hit is ok? I dont see any further details on the news website.
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is going on I lived in gateway for 15 years and still do .. hell the traffic alone on gateway blvd driving is enough to cause safty issues just driving and seeing kids cutting across to walk home scres me to be scared for them... !!!!! would the school let their kids walk unattended.. especially in season.... no statisitics... please!!!
ReplyDeleteMany times I have had to stop behind a vehicle (usually a dark blue SUV)on Gateway Blvd. which has stopped right there in the road to pick up a GCIS/GCHS student from the sidewalk. The parents need to stop complaining about the parent pick-up lines and be patient for the safety of the kids. The pick-up line is not that bad, except the first couple of weeks of the school year and when there is no after-care around holidays. Parents need to set an example for their kids in following the rules and showing some patience rather than making their own rules for picking up their children. As for the middle/high school students walking to the elementary school to meet up with their siblings for parent pick-up, it was my understanding that one of the teachers at the middle/high school was supposed to walk this group of kids over to the elementary school.
ReplyDeleteMy son is also a 7th grader at the Gateway Middle school. He says that they were told that the boy has brain damage, I am not sure if that is correct, but this needs to addressed for safety of all of our kids and the area school zones!
